Back to Basics: Wheel of Life

I just don’t understand how the term work-life balance ever caught on. After all, isn’t work a big part of many of our lives? For me, LIFE BALANCE seems a much more relevant term.

Life isn’t a bowl of cherries…it’s a PIE!

A pie? Yes, think of your life as being comprised of 8 dimensions or segments. Here are the 8 that I use with clients; but, you can feel free to come up with your own if these don’t resonate with you.

The 8 Pieces of our Wheel of Life Pie

In no particular order, here they are:

  • Significant Other
  • Friends and Family
  • Fun and Recreation (there may not be a lot of that going on right now)
  • Career
  • Finance
  • Possessions (your house, car(s), your physical assets, etc.)
  • Personal Growth
  • Health

Try standing on one foot for a minute

Take a moment and stand on one foot for a moment and observe. What is your body doing? It’s likely trying to keep you balanced. Our lives are like that too. Life balance isn’t something you strive for, get there and then forget it. It’s a constant adjustment trying to find whatever the right balance is for you at any point in time.

How does your Wheel of Life look right now?

Because our lives are so very different right now and I know that some of you are struggling, I though it might be a good time to go back to basics. If you’re not challenged with life these days, that’s great but it’s still a very worthwhile exercise any time.

Download the My Wheel of Life e-book and follow the instructions. Basically, you will be rating each of the 8 pieces of pie that make up your life on a scale of 0 to 10 with “0” being I’m so not there and “10” being I’m so there! Draw a rounded line in each piece of the pie and put the number that you’ve assigned to it over the line.

Next, do the exercise again and draw a line where you would like each piece of the pie to be on your Wheel of Life.

Rome wasn’t built in a day…

Don’t for a minute think that you can go about changing every score overnight. It takes time. Which segment or piece of your Wheel of Life pie do you want to start working on? You can’t choose them all – that is unrealistic. When looking at what you would like your score to be in any area, think for a moment if this will impact another score on your Wheel of Life pie. For example, you may decide that this is a good time to focus more on your career aspirations and have decided to take additional courses or sign up for a significant program. The time that you will have to devote to your learning, is likely to take up some Significant Other and Friends and Family time.
